These polls were originally due in November 2019. However, the Rajasthan government bifurcated the municipal bodies to create six corporations for the delimitation of wards while postponing the elections.

Rajasthan High Court has ordered the state government to conduct elections for the six newly created municipal bodies by October 31.

In its plea, the state had sought deferment of six municipal bodies of Jaipur, Jodhpur and Kota from October 31, 2020, to March 31 of next year. The plea was heard by a division bench of the Rajasthan HC comprising Chief Justice Indrajit Mahanty and Justice Prakash Gupta on Tuesday.

The court is of the view that even municipal body polls can be conducted if panchayat elections can be held in the state without any hindrance. Elections to the civic bodies of Jaipur, Jodhpur and Kota were postponed earlier this year owing to the Covid-19 pandemic.

These polls were originally due in November 2019. However, the Rajasthan government bifurcated the municipal bodies to create six corporations for the delimitation of wards while postponing the elections.

Meanwhile, elections to 129 urban local bodies in Rajasthan were postponed till October 20.
