Ajmer: The general council meeting of Ajmer Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Wednesday witnessed chaotic scenes where councillors came up with the issue of sewerage system in the city. They abused the officials for misappropriate of funds and careless working. Both councillors of BJP and Congress shouted slogans 'Shame, shame, shame' against executive engineer (XEN) Kedar Sharma and accused him of mismanagement. The agenda of the meeting was sewerage system in Ajmer and the facts kept on the table said that almost Rs 300 crore have been spent in last 15 years and not even 30 percent of the sewer lines in the city are functional. "Importantly XEN Sharma presented a false report on the table and this shows how the working is," said Neeraj Sharma, a BJP councillor. He added that the wards in which the sewer line work has been shown functional were objected by the councillors of the same wards. The councillors accused that Sharma is working on deputation in different agencies since last 18 years and he worked mostly for the sewerage project. "He was deputed in RUIDP and then JNURM and now in municipality and is not taking the onus of completing the sewerage system," added another councillor.Another councillor Ganesh Chouhan stood in the meeting and said that the contractor laying the sewer line in his area beat him up when he objected to the quality of work. Almost every councillor criticised Sharma for his work. Later when he stood up to answer the questions, the councillors shouted slogans of 'Shame, shame'.Mayor Dharmender Gahlot stated that the issue is critical and they have asked all the councillors to provide their suggestions and have directed the officials to complete the work. "Yes the problem is that in last 15 years, three agencies worked on this project and everyone claimed that the system is complete, but we found missing links and no chambers in most of the regions."He added that now the aim is to provide services to people. He added that public representatives face public's criticism when the officials do not work properly. On the other hand, XEN Kedar Sharma said that when the corporation got the charge of the sewer line it was incomplete. When he was asked that he was working since the initiation of the project, he replied that that time he was a junior engineer and there were other officials above him.The matter of sewerage system came into limelight when people of Ajmer were billed for sewerage charges in their water bills. They said that they have no connections and they started boycotting the councillors in their regions. People were annoyed and said that without sewerage connection, the government is charging money. The matter became serious when it was found out that the area where sewer line is shown as properly working actually doesn't have a sewer line.BJP councillors and leaders are a worried lot now that this issue has put BJP government in a bad light and therefore it is important to fix the problem and find a solution.Ajmer is included in smart city project but the condition is that there is no proper sewerage system in the city. "The matter was also reported to Lokayukta but there was no action taken as senior IAS officials are also involved in this," alleged a councillor.
