Assn spreads awareness about adulteration in food products

Singh said these adulterated products were mostly sold out to the catering owners, in hotels and at religious institutions also. Members of the association alleged that the district Health Department was not taking strict action against those who were engaged in adulterated food items. Earlier the adulteration rate in the state was 20 per cent but now it has gone to more than 40.

Jalandhar, April 12 The Progressive Dairy Farmers’ Association was in the district on Thursday to spread awareness among the masses about adulteration prevailing in food products. Association’s chief Daljeet Singh said they had recently got hold of one of the biggest dairy products factory in Bhatinda that was indulged in making adulterated food products. Members of the association alleged that the district Health Department was not taking strict action against those who were engaged in adulterated food items. Daljeet said, “Cheese is not being sold at Rs 120 per kg in the whole sale market, but the adulterated cheese can be bought at Rs 120 per kg. The accused further sell it to customers at Rs 250 per kg.” Whereas the actual rate of pure fresh cheese is Rs 220-250 per kg at the whole sale market and which is sold for Rs 300 per kg at retail stores.Moreover, on the last Monday the team also discovered making of foul desi ghee in Faridkot district, he added. Singh said these adulterated products were mostly sold out to the catering owners, in hotels and at religious institutions also. Consequently the association have started a campaign to catch as many businessmen as possible, for that they have also planned to give a cash reward of Rs 11,000 to the person who would help them to find out places where adulterated food items are sold, he added. The Progressive Dairy Farmers members put strong allegations on District Health Department officials and said, the officials lack in taking any strong action against the culprits and the purchase and selling of the foul eatables was increasing widely. Earlier the adulteration rate in the state was 20 per cent but now it has gone to more than 40.
