She had been grappling with floods in Bihar when the tragedy struck Aakanksha N Bhardwaj Jalandhar, July 19 “It was the first day of the year (New Year) when I, along with my cousin, came here, leaving our families behind to earn for them. We both had discussed that we would start afresh on the New Year and the best will happen to us for the rest of the year. We had never imagined in our worst dreams that such a thing will happen,” shared Mohamad Insul on his cousin Mohamad Sayed’s death. Sayed, who was the sole bread earner for his family, is survived by his wife and five children (four daughters and a son) who live in Bihar. Insul said Sayed’s wife lost consciousness the moment she heard about her husband’s death. “Back in Bihar she was already grappling with floods which had made it difficult for our people to live and now this tragedy. We had to ask our family friends to help her board the train. She was not in that condition,” he said. Sayed’s wife and children boarded the train this morning and would reach the city by tomorrow. Insul is a rickshaw-puller. “The tragedy of with people like us is we leave our people and come here to work and this is how they treat us. We never get justice,” he said. Mohamad Shiraz, younger brother of Sayed, came to the city a few months ago and was working with a farmer in Kartarpur. “We want justice. He used to work and get Rs 500 per day. We got a call from my cousin Insul that we have lost him. For a moment, I didn’t know how to respond,” he said. They said this was not the life which they had ever thought of here. He got buried alive under loose earth which fell over him when he was busy in laying the sewer line.
