Nawanshahr, August 19 In Nawanshahr, residents living in Kalra Mohalla, Kulam Road and Chuharpur village areas were moved to safer places as the flow in Bein, situated on Garhshankar Road, increased due to rain. There are around 200 houses in the area which were vacated. As per information, such a situation was last witnessed in 2011 when due to heavy rain, the flow in bein had increased and the water spilled over, which led to inundation of houses and fields of people living in these areas. Officials said these areas were low lying and people belonging to the Below Poverty Line (BPL) category stay here. They were moved to Kirpal Ashram, gurdwara, gym, and rain basera. As per information, around 80 persons were sent to Kirpal Ashram and some were taken to gurdwara and gym. To ensure safety of residents of 67 villages adjoining the Dhussi Bundh of the Sutlej, the officials were asked to evacuate the residents to safer places. Nawanshahr has 41 low-lying and flood-prone villages while Balachaur has 26. Meanwhile, most of the villagers were not ready to move and leave their fields and houses. Relief camps have been set up at schools, gurdwaras, and grounds (for the cattle). Four incidents of roof cave-in reported Jalandhar: As it rained heavily on Monday morning, four incidents of roofs cave-in of four old buildings of the city have been reported. Owners of the four buildings are learnt to be safe and have suffered no injury. The buildings included a shop on Railway Road and three houses in Purian Mohalla, Mitha Bazaar and Khingran Gate. In the roof collapse incident at Mitha Bazaar, an electricity pole outside the house also fell off. It happened as the frontal part of the house also fell towards the road. Thankfully, there were no passers-by on the road during the incident, said a resident, Bittu Pandit. It began raining this morning around 8:15 am. It kept raining heavily for nearly two hours after which all city roads got badly inundated. Outer areas, including Maqsudan and Partapura, received less rain.
