Farmers flay RCEP, hold stir at Lohian

Jalandhar, August 15As many as 400 farmers of the Kisan Sangharsh Comittee Punjab hold a protest at Lohian on Saturday against the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), a proposed trade agreement among 16 countries –terming it detrimental to farmers of the country. The protest was held under functionaries Tarsem Singh, district president of the union Salwinder Singh, among others. The RCEP is a mega trade agreement being negotiated between 16 countries, including 10-member ASEAN, India, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand. The farmers apprehend the implementation of the free trade agreement under the RCEP shall give way to increased cheap imports from other countries which would impact their livelihood. They also threatened to intensify their stir and hold state-wide protests if their demands were not met.

The protesters burnt the effigies of the Central Government and the Prime Minister. The RCEP is a mega trade agreement being negotiated between 16 countries, including 10-member ASEAN, India, China, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand. Once implemented it would lead to zero duty imports on most products between the participating countries. The farmers apprehend the implementation of the free trade agreement under the RCEP shall give way to increased cheap imports from other countries which would impact their livelihood. They also threatened to intensify their stir and hold state-wide protests if their demands were not met. — TNS
