Schools told to follow govt’s Safe School Vahan SchemeTribune News ServiceJalandhar, October 22The Education Department has sent instructions to the District Educational Officers (DEOs), both secondary and primary, that the department of transportation has passed some orders regarding Safe School Vahan Policy. All DEOs have been instructed to hold a meeting with private schools providing bus facility to the students within their respective districts. It said that the school authority was responsible for transportation of the schoolchildren. School heads have been asked to ensure that school buses be painted yellow. The instructions read, “School Bus must be written on the back and front of the bus and if it is a hired bus, then ‘on school duty’ must be clearly indicated on it.

All DEOs have been instructed to hold a meeting with private schools providing bus facility to the students within their respective districts. It said that the school authority was responsible for transportation of the schoolchildren. School heads have been asked to ensure that school buses be painted yellow. The instructions read, “School Bus must be written on the back and front of the bus and if it is a hired bus, then ‘on school duty’ must be clearly indicated on it. It should have a first aid box and a fire extinguisher. Apart from this, windows in the bus should be fitted with horizontal grills, and doors with a reliable lock. Also, school name and telephone numbers should be written on it.” It reads that a driver, who had been challaned more than thrice in a year for offences such as red light jumping and violation of lane discipline and unauthorised persons are not employed in first place. It stated that transport committee should be constituted in each school. The committee could be headed by the principal and shall comprise of a police officer.
