The players talked about what preparations are being done for the upcoming 2020 Olympics, their journey and problems they went through in reaching here. Gurkirat Kaur (24), who is a daughter of a farmer, shared that reaching the Olympics was her dream and she could not be more happier. The drag flicker in the team, Gurkirat said when she started playing in Amritsar, people raised questions that being a girl I was playing hockey. Talking about the Olympics, Gurkirat said they had been going through a busy routine.

It is earning accolades for its mind-blowing win in Bhubaneshwar where the team defeated the USA. It will now be gearing up for the camp that is going to be held in Bengaluru on November 13. The Tribune talked to Gurkirat Kaur, a player from Amritsar, and Navjot Kaur from Haryana, who were in Kapurthala to play a tournament that is being held at the RCF. The players talked about what preparations are being done for the upcoming 2020 Olympics, their journey and problems they went through in reaching here. Gurkirat Kaur (24), who is a daughter of a farmer, shared that reaching the Olympics was her dream and she could not be more happier. The drag flicker in the team, Gurkirat said when she started playing in Amritsar, people raised questions that being a girl I was playing hockey. “I belong to a small village. Obviously, local residents asked my parents about it. But my parents never listened to anyone and supported me throughout,” she said. Talking about the Olympics, Gurkirat said they had been going through a busy routine. “We practice daily for hours. And with this, we also have to give attention to our health. Hence, we take care of everything, be it game or health. We take psychology classes too, so, right now, the whole concentration is on the Olympics,” the player explained. Navjot Kaur (24) from Haryana, a striker in the team, said her father was a mechanic. “In my place too, a girl playing in the fields was seen as an objectionable thing, but not anymore. Now, more girls have been coming forward.” Till now, I have played 170 tournaments, she said.
