SOUTH ASIAN GAMES Jalandhar, December 10 Gursharan Kaur, who won a gold medal in the Senior National Wrestling Championship held at PAP grounds here from November 29 to December 1, has again given a reason to cheer by winning a gold in the 76-kg category in the recently concluded South Asian Games in Nepal. Rajni Bhalla, one of her coaches, said Gursharan, who is working with the Punjab Police, loves wrestling and it was her biggest quality. “After a gap of several years, she started wrestling and look at her performances. This shows her dedication towards the game,” the coach said. Gursharan, who is mother to a three-year-old girl, is now trying hard to make her way into Olympics 2020, which will be held in Tokyo. The coach said Gursharan and everyone in the state want to see her getting qualified for the Olympics. After winning a gold in the Senior National Wrestling Tournament, she had said her daughter was an inspiration for her. When you become a mother, you become stronger and my daughter has come as a motivation in my life because of whom I started playing the game again,” she had said. In the Senior National Wrestling Tournament, Gursharan’s win had come as a ray of hope for sports lovers in Punjab as she was the only woman from the state who had won a gold in the meet. Loud cheers were heard for her as she defeated Pooja of Haryana (4-2) in the 76-kg category to win the medal in the tournament. About SAG The Indian contingent for the 2019 South Asian Games (SAG) was declared by the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) as the gold medallists at the Senior Wrestling National Championships were inducted to the squad. The seven-member men’s and women’s contingent was led by Olympic medallist Sakshi Malik and U-23 World Championship silver medallist Ravinder in the meet, which was held from December 6 to December 9 in Nepal. “The players have been chosen after a healthy competition on the national platform and I am confident that they will defend their 2016 titles in both men and women’s categories at the South Asian Games,” said Brij Bhushan Saran Singh, WFI president.
