Jalandhar, July 12 The brutal assault on Handa family in Model Town in September last year where a woman and her servant were murdered and the recent assault on Sunita Rani, sister-in-law of the owner of Haveli restaurant Satish Jain has a common thread. The crimes were committed by house servants working with the families for years but none of the families had got their verification done by the police department. These are two of the several cases where servants, tenants or migrant labourers were involved in brutal assault or murder of the owners. Despite that, there are no takers for the special verification drive launched by the police for the last one month. According to Jalandhar Police Commissioner Praveen Sinha, there are approximately five lakh migrant workers who are either living as tenants, labourers or servants in the city but very few owners and industrialists have come forward to get them verified by the police. “There is hardly one per cent of the migrant workers who have been verified by us. Despite launching a special verification drive, there are only few takers till date. They can get the verification done either through any of our Saanjh Kendras or by applying online as well,” said Sinha. While informing more about the online verification process, the Police Commissioner informed that after logging into the website ppsaanjh.in, one can go to the ‘services offered’ menu and click the ‘verification’ tab. Any person can get the verification details there. An applicant has to pay a fee of Rs 50 for the verification. The Police Commissioner informed that the department is making a mobile app to ease the verification drive. He said once the app is launched, people will be able to apply for online verification by uploading documents and other details on their phones while sitting at home. The police is also contemplating to make use of section 188 of the Indian Penal Code (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant) to ensure compliance.
