Universities can aid research on local issues: J-K governor

Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra on Wednesday said universities can play a vital role in the research carried out on local issues like preservation of biodiversity and traffic management. Over 1000 students, including 56 gold medalists, received their degrees while 24 research scholars were awarded Doctorate and M. Phil degrees during the convocation. He said the Central government will ensure that there would not be any shortage of funds. Vohra said he expected students from all parts of the country to come to Jammu and Kashmir, not only to enjoy its beauty, but also to gain knowledge. Principal Scientific Advisor to Government of India K Vijayraghavan, who was the chief guest at the event, said challenges regarding the infrastructure development of the university need to be addressed.

Addressing the first convocation of Central University of Kashmir here Vohra said “I have been suggesting the Vice-Chancellors that the importance of Universities directly relates to the extent of research carried out on local issues relating to climate change, preservation of water bodies, biodiversity and ecology, master planning of cities, traffic management and others.” The governor said there was no dearth of talent in the state and girls and women were excelling in all the fields and professions. Vohra said he expected students from all parts of the country to come to Jammu and Kashmir, not only to enjoy its beauty, but also to gain knowledge.
