Snow in Jammu and Kashmir gives chilly start to Kolkata weekend

On December 29, Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 10.6°C, which has been the lowest so far this season. KOLKATA: The city started its weekend on a chilly note with the mercury plunging to 12.5°C on Saturday. Only once in the last five Decembers - prior to last month - did the mercury drop below 12°C.

Weathermen said the snowfall in northern Himalayas has helped pull the mercury down."It has been snowing in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. Since the northwesterly winds have gained intensity, they are carrying in the chill yet again. If it continues to snow in Kashmir, the city will remain chilly. There is no weather system in sight in the region that may prevent the winds from blowing in," said Regional Meteorological Centre director GK Das.The maximum temperature could touch 26°C since the sky will remain clear, added Das.This December, Kolkata had its longest chilly spell in the last five years. The minimum temperature remained below normal for almost two weeks. Only once in the last five Decembers - prior to last month - did the mercury drop below 12°C. On December 26, 2014, Kolkata clocked 11.4°C. This year, it has been a steady drop in mercury since December 20 when the minimum temperature was 13.9°C. On December 29, Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 10.6°C, which has been the lowest so far this season.
