For the first time, the army has deployed women soldiers close to LOC near Pakistan in the Tangdhar sector of North Kashmir. This is the first time in the history of the army. At an altitude of ten thousand feet, in Sadhana Top, the most sensitive area, about half a dozen women soldiers, under the leadership of a woman officer, are deployed to prevent drug and arms smuggling. These women soldiers are from Assam Rifles and have come on deputation.
GOC Major General ADS Aujla said that till now the women soldiers of the police were with them, but this is the first time that women soldiers of the army are here with us and we have deployed them at some places. He said that there were many cases of smuggling in these areas and terrorists were using women for smuggling. Therefore, women soldiers have been deployed to check trafficking and check women. According to the GOC, these will help us and we hope that whether it is smuggling of drugs or weapons, it will decrease.
Significantly, women in the army have been working as military officers for almost two decades but are not yet in the post of soldiers. In December 2019, women were recruited in the army for the first time as soldiers, but they were recruited in the Military Police of the Women`s Cadet Army and are currently undergoing training in Bengaluru. Even before the deployment of those women cadets, the Army has deployed women personnel of Assam Rifles on the LoC in Kashmir.
This challenge is not new for us:
The father and grandfather of Captain Gursimran Kaur of the Army Service Corps (ASC), who is leading the Captain Gursimran Mahila Dal, has also served in the army. Gursimran told that here women are playing equal responsibility as compared to men. "We have been deployed here to check smuggling," he said. We have been posted on high altitude even before this, so this is not a new challenge for us. Be it snow or rain, duty is our first priority.
The Sadhna top on which this female platoon is posted has its own history. Bollywood`s famous actress Sadhana came here to boost the morale of soldiers in the 1965 war with Pakistan and since then the place has been named Sadhana Top.
