According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a fresh western disturbance—storms that originate near the Mediterranean Sea, travel eastwards, and bring precipitation over northern parts of India during the winter season will affect the Western Himalayan Region from Friday, January 22.

Under its influence, scattered to fairly widespread rainfall/snowfall is expected over Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, and Himachal Pradesh, whereas isolated rain/snow has been forecast over Uttarakhand from Friday to Sunday, January 22-24.

Furthermore, heavy rainfall/snowfall is particularly likely at isolated places across Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad on Saturday. The Weather Channel’s met team has indicated that about 20 cm of snowfall will be common especially across Jammu & Kashmir, with some spots also receiving 80 cm.

Isolated thunderstorms and lightning will also lash Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad on Friday, and Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on Saturday.

As for the northwest, very light to light rains and thundershowers have been predicted at isolated places over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi on Saturday.

While cold has dominated the north Indian weather since the beginning of 2021, a majority of the states and territories in the region have recorded normal to excess precipitation this year.

Between January 1-20, Delhi (29.6 mm), Haryana (21.2 mm), and Rajasthan (8.9 mm) have all received ‘large excess’ rainfall as compared to their respective long-term average figures for this period, while Jammu & Kashmir (76.9 mm) and Uttarakhand (27.3 mm) have registered ‘excess’ precipitation.

Further, the likes of Punjab (10 mm) and Uttar Pradesh (5.5 mm) have recorded ‘normal’ rains in the first 20 days of the new year. Himachal Pradesh (30.4 mm), on the other hand, has witnessed ‘deficit’ rainfall/snowfall, while Chandigarh (5.9 mm) and Ladakh (3.7 mm) have experienced ‘large deficit’ in terms of precipitation.
