Is Gulmarg Tragedy first in the list of Cable Car accidents in India? Find out here!

While the incident has surely descended a pall of gloom on the family of the deceased, Gulmarg, too, is still reeling under the ‘freak accident’.

“Gulmarg tragedy”, an incident which is sure to send chills down your spine every time you will think of a cable lift. The infamous accident in north Kashmir’s Baramulla killed seven people including a family of four from Delhi.

The mishap took place when, Gulmarg Gondola, the service that operates the cable cars was hit by a falling tree, which shattered the glass of the cable car, throwing out its occupants, who later plunged around 30 feet to their deaths.

While the incident has surely descended a pall of gloom on the family of the deceased, Gulmarg, too, is still reeling under the ‘freak accident’.

But, did you know, the Kashmir accident is not an isolated incident in the history of death struck cable cars?

In 2003, four tourists lost their lives after two cable-cars fell from the ropeway into a ravine in West Bengal’s Darjeeling.

In 2005, a cable car in Mussorie stalled, which left tourists dangling in the air, till the time when Indo-Tibetian Border Police initiated a rescue and averted the crisis.

In April and again in September 2013, two cable cars carrying 22 guests in Uttarakhand`s Nainital experienced technical snags.

In 2014, a boy from Nepal lost his arm after it was crushed by a malfunctioning door in Uttarakhand, whereas in in July 2016, a 26-year-old fell from a cable car into the Mandakini river and later in September, the hill station trolley took the life of a three-year-old girl who was drowned after she fell from the lift.

In 2016,  yet another accident in Andhra Pradesh’s Kailasagiri Hill Park, tourists had a narrow escape last year after a hook of the car detached from the cable and fell. Luckily, the accident took place at about eight feet from above the ground and hence, there were no major injuries.
