UGC directs Kolhan University to go cashless

JAMSHEDPUR: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked Kolhan University (KU) to digitise all its financial transactions and that of its affiliated colleges. "We will promote the use of dedicated apps like Mera Mobile Mera Bank and Bhim app among the students by organising frequent workshops," said KU vice-chancellor Shukla Mahanty . Besides, counter sales at the canteens in all the colleges are also carried out in cash.The varsity authorities have promised that it will train its NSS and NCC cadets for promotion of digitisation among college students and commercial staff. "Therewon't be any issue in converting to total digitisation in the colleges based in urban areas (such as Jamshedpur Women's College and Jamshedpur Cooperative College) but colleged in rural areas may face difficulty in getting parents/guardians agree to a digital transaction," the V-C said. Besides, mobile wallet service providers will also be popularised among students for instant cashless purchase at the canteens.According to the varsity, a large chunk of KU colleges are located in the suburban and rural areas and parents of the students studying in the said colleges prefer depositing fees in cash.

In a letter addressed to the varsity earlier this month, the UGC asked for swift conversion from a cash to cashless mode as it would benefit parents and students and the varsity too.Large transactions such as payments to private agencies that execute infrastructure projects in KU are done on a cashless mode in all 16 colleges under the varsity along with admission and monthly tuition fees.
