JAMSHEDPUR: The district administration of the Steel City announced to increase the penalty amount for the use of polythene carry bags from Rs 100 to Rs 1,000 after it realised traders are puncturing the goal to make the city plastic-free."Previously, a section of denizens (traders and consumers) used polythene carry bags out of ignorance but now after consistent awareness drives and repeated warnings we still saw it being rampantly used. In order to curb the same, the penalty amount was increased," said Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) Special Officer Sanjay Kumar The JNAC, which exercises administrative command across the urban limits of the Steel City, informed small time vendors earlier had to pay Rs 100 if found guilty of using polythene carry bags but now they will have to pay Rs 1,000. Likewise, restaurants and hotel owners previously had to pay a fine of Rs 1,000 but now the fine amount has been hiked to Rs 5,000.In the case of wholesale dealers of polythene carry bags, the penalty of Rs 10,000 has been increased to Rs 1 lakh.
