RANCHI: Situation in Nagri was tense again on Thursday night following stone pelting by groups of people but was brought under control after heavy deployment of police and Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel. Tension has been brewing in the capital city suburb since Tuesday when banned meat was found near a temple located a few meters away from the Ranchi-Gumla highway. The deployment of the forces also ensured peace during the Friday prayers on last day of holy month of Ramzan . Though private vehicles were seen moving on the road, most shops remained close and people preferred to stay indoors. A few small eateries and those selling festivity items were the only shops found open.Earlier on Thursday night, police had to use force to disperse the mob of stone pelters. Senior SP Kuldeep Dwivedi and deputy commissioner Rai Mahimapat Ray visited the troubled areas and spoke to the local people. "We had opened fire in the air to control the mob and situation was under control soon," Dwivedi said.RAF enforcement from Jamshedpur was called in and a team of district armed police was also stationed at Nagri. On Friday, SP (rural) made two rounds of the area and briefed the security forces on handling eventualities."We are hopeful that people will be cooperative and the Eid festival will pass off peacefully," said Abdul Ansari, a sexagenarian who offered Friday prayers at the local mosque. He said people also preferred resuming their business activities after the prayers. "We want the district administration to continue with the deployment of security forces because their presence would keep the miscreants in control," said Arun Sao of Nagri village, who was apprehensive of opening his grocery shop located between a mosque and a temple.Police also arrested 24 persons and continued with raids. They said those found creating trouble would not be spared. "Public should not pay attention to rumours and resume normal activities," Dwivedi said.
