12 persons sentenced to 4 years in Kharsawan lynching case of 2017

The case relating to lynching of the four persons is still at a trial stage and all convicts and those acquitted still face the charges. The mob also torched their four-wheeler. JAMSHEDPUR: The court of additional district judge (first class) on Monday sentenced 12 persons to four years' rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 each in one of the two cases related to the May 18, 2017 lynching of four persons in Seraikela-Kharswan district.The case in which the verdict was given concerns the attack on police during the incident. The guilty included Krishna Sahu, Bhagirathi Jyotishi, Kundu Jyotishi, Falguni Jyotishi, Tarun Jyotishi, Arun Jyotishi, Krishna Jyotishi, Chaturbhuj Jyotishi, Bara Kanu Jyotishi, Sitaram Sahu and Balbhadra Behra.Three persons, Laxmikanth Behra, Agasti Sahu and Pankaj Sahu, were acquitted.The four victims were on way to Odisha apparently for business when the mob driven by child-lifting rumours attacked their vehicle in the early hours and killed them. The second case relates to rioting and murder of Sheikh Naim (35), Sheikh Sajju (25), Sheikh Siraj (26) and Sheikh Halim (28) - all cattle traders - by a mob on suspicion of being child-lifters at Shobapur village under Rajnagar police station.Pronouncing the judgment, additional district judge Ashish Saxena held the 12 accused guilty under Sections 147, 323, 353, 452, 504 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code .

When police reached the site to bring the situation under control, they were also attacked and the police van was torched by the rioters.The police then lodged a case (no 29/17) in Rajnagar police station against the persons named on charges of rioting, wrongful restraint, voluntarily causing hurt, assault to deter police servant from discharging duty and intentional insult to provoke breach of peace.Following 13 months of trial, the court pronounced the judgment. The case relating to lynching of the four persons is still at a trial stage and all convicts and those acquitted still face the charges.
