Kharkai, Subarnarekha in spate, East Singhbhum on alert

JAMSHEDPUR: East Singhbhum officials put relief and rescue personnel on alert on Saturday after the Kharkai and the Subarnarekha began to flow close to the danger mark. "The water level of the Kharkai has touched 127.98 metres, about 1.2 metres below the red mark. This may lead to further rise in the water level of the Kharkai and Subarnarekha. Besides East Sighbhum, Ranchi, Bokaro, Daltonganj and Dumka may also witness rain over the next two days. He added, "The Met department has predicted moderate to heavy rain in parts of East Sighbhum and Seraikela-Kharsawan districts in the next 48 hours.

The Subarnarekha was flowing at 118.60 metres, just three metres below the danger level" an official said. "We have been constantly monitoring the situation since Friday night," he added.The officials said the water level in the Subarnarekha rose sharply after the Chandil dam opened four of its radial gates to release excess water on Thursday. He added, "The Met department has predicted moderate to heavy rain in parts of East Sighbhum and Seraikela-Kharsawan districts in the next 48 hours. This may lead to further rise in the water level of the Kharkai and Subarnarekha."Since Thursday, the Steel City has received more than 100mm of rain. Keeping this in mind, the district administration asked relief and rescue personnel to be ready in the event of flooding in low-lying areas of three municipalities - Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC), Mango Notified Area Committee (MNAC) and Jugsalai Municipality.Reports said a formation of low pressure area over northern Odisha could lead to heavy rainfall in both Jharkhand and the neighbouring state. Besides East Sighbhum, Ranchi, Bokaro, Daltonganj and Dumka may also witness rain over the next two days. On Fiday, the state capital saw waterlogging in many areas such as Madhukam Area near Piska More and Albert Ekka Chowk. This caused hardships to residents, especially children and office-goers.This year, Jharkhand has suffered a rain deficit. An earlier report identified Deoghar, Dumka, Garhwa, Khunti and Pakur as district with a substantial rain deficit of 40% and above. Khunti was on top of the list with more than 66% rain deficit.(With inputs from agencies)
