Six die after consuming 'spurious' liquor in Ranchi

Prayag Nagarchi, who along with Fulmani Devi (70) were admitted to Rims, died later on Sunday evening. The bodies have been sent for post mortem.Police detained four people from different parts of the city on suspicion of their involvement in the illicit liquor trade and manufacture. While three of them were let off, one Sukra Oraon was arrested after he confessed to selling country-made liquor.Ranchi SSP Anish Gupta, who visited the locality, said, "It is not clear whether all the deaths took place due to consumption of spurious liqour. One of the deceased, Paras, was reportedly ill for the last two days. We will conduct a probe to ascertain if the cause of the deaths was due to food poisoning or spurious liquor. We are still collecting details from the family of the victims."Locals said the victims complained of stomach ache and started vomiting before collapsing on the ground, never to wake up.Reshmi Devi, daughter in-law of Ashok, said he was an alcoholic and on Saturday evening he returned home in an inebriated condition. "Soon after he came home at around 5pm, he started vomiting. He died two hours later," Reshmi said, adding, "The government must take measures to stop illegal sale of liquor in our area."Vijay, meanwhile, complained of uneasiness while having tea on Sunday morning. "He closed his eyes soon after and never woke up," Vijay's sister in-law said. Ashok, Vijay and Billu are distant relatives
