Congress pulls up Jaitley for criticising RBI

"During his speech in Mumbai on October 27, RBI deputy governor Viral Acharya had said that undermining the RBI independence and autonomy could be potentially catastrophic. "Accusing Jaitley of making a bid to undermine the autonomy of the RBI by questioning its lending policy, Kumar said the Narendra Modi government is attempting to usurp the powers of the independent constitutional institutions of the country (RBI and CBI). He added, "RBI is the payment regulatory body of India and it will continue to remain so. "The Modi government is trying to take charge of the monetary policy by weakening the RBI but it will not be allowed to do so," Kumar said. He suggested that there is a great degree of differences between the Central Bank and the government on vital monetary policy issue," Kumar said.

JAMSHEDPUR: The Congress party on Wednesday pulled up Union finance minister Arun Jaitley for blaming the Reserve Bank of India RBI ) in failing to curb indiscriminate lending from 2008 to 2014 that left banks with debts.While questioning Jaitley over the abrupt jump in the Non-Performing Assets (NPAs) between 2014 and 2018, Congress party members wanted to know who is accountable for this. State Congress president and national spokesperson Ajoy Kumar said, "When the Congress-led UPA left the government in 2014 the NPA was Rs 3 lakh crore but in the last four years since then, the NPA went up to Rs 12 lakh crore."Accusing Jaitley of making a bid to undermine the autonomy of the RBI by questioning its lending policy, Kumar said the Narendra Modi government is attempting to usurp the powers of the independent constitutional institutions of the country (RBI and CBI). "The Modi government is trying to take charge of the monetary policy by weakening the RBI but it will not be allowed to do so," Kumar said.
