PM Narendra Modi visit revives hope for Sarna code

JAMSHEDPUR: Adivasis, who have been demanding a separate religious code for Sarna tribes, are keenly awaiting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Palamu (Jharkhand) and Mayurbhanj ( Odisha ) on Saturday. The Centre is committed to fulfilling the demands and fundamental rights of the tribals,” former BJP MP (Mayurbhanj) Salkhan Murmu said. Murmu later formed the Jharkhand Disom Party (JDP)“Tribals are a decisive factor in more than 30% of the assembly seats in Jharkhand and Odisha,” he added.On Tuesday, Murmu had met chief minister Raghubar Das to discuss the issue of Sarna code. “The CM was positive and said he will have a few more rounds of talks with me on the issue,” Murmu said.Earlier on March 21, 2018, JDP and Adivasi Sengel Abhiyan (ASA) supporters had organised a rail-roko agitation in Odisha, Jharkhand and West Bengal in support of their demand for a separate religious code. They expect that the PM may make an announcement on their demand in his speeches during the visit.Many adivasis hope that the PM may say something significant in relation to their demand for a separate religious code, keeping in view this year’s assembly and parliamentary elections both in Jharkhand and Odisha.“I, on Wednesday, sent a letter to the PM urging him to make an announcement on the Sarna code either at Palamu or Mayurbhanj that will send a message to the country’s 10 crore-strong adivasi population.
