Heavyweight ticket aspirants put JMM in a fix in Jamshedpur

“As part of our poll strategy, we have decided to announce the name of our candidates, including one for the Jamshedpur seat, in April,” he said. The seat has a large chunk of Kurmi voters spread across Jugsalai, Potka, Baharagora and Ghatshila assembly seats. Singh had bagged close to 1 lakh votes when he unsuccessfully contested on a JVM-P ticket from the Jamshedpur parliamentary seat in 2009.Mahato is a seasoned politician and the Kurmi face of the party. Fancying his chances of winning the seat, Mahato too is keen to contest the election.

JAMSHEDPUR: Though JMM got the Jamshedpur Lok Sabha seat in the mahagathbandhan’s seat-sharing formula, the tribal party’s leadership is in a dilemma over the candidate to field from the steel hub.While Baharagora MLA Kunal Sarangi, Arvind Kumar Singh alias Malkhan Singh and Astik Mahto are in the race for getting the party ticket, the JMM is not sure is about who would be the ideal candidate as the Jamshedpur seat is a tricky turf with a combination of multi-ethnic urban and rural voters.Sarangi, a technocrat-turned-politician, is popular in the ranks and is liked among urban voters. Though Sarangi on the record has maintained that he is not in the race for the ticket, party insiders confirmed that the Lancaster University Management School (LUMS) business graduate, is indeed one of the probables. “It is for the party to decide when and where to utilize me,” he said .Singh, the other contender, is an upper caste Rajput leader who won the Kurmi-dominated Ichagarh assembly seat in the adjoining Seraikela-Kharswasn district in the 1995, 2000 and 2009 assembly polls.The former JVM (P) legislator, who has his roots in Bihar and is a popular face among the voters with roots in the neighbouring state, is hoping that his wider acceptability gets him the party ticket.
