98-year-old from West Bengal gets pacemaker at Meditrina hospital

"Swami Nanda will visit the hospital next week to get his stitches removed," hospital authorities informed. "Delighted over the success of the operation, Swami Nanda blessed the team who conducted the surgery. "I arrived here in a critical state but am leaving the hospital in a better condition. "The operation was a successful one for the 98-year-old man," Meditrina hospital director Amitav Chatterjee said.Explaining the case, Chaudhary said, given the age of the patient, doctors took more time to prepare for the surgery when compared to other cases. I am thankful to all the doctors for taking good care of me," he said.

JAMSHEDPUR: Ninety-eight-year-old Swami Vivikta Nanda is perhaps the oldest person to have successfully undergone a pacemaker implantation at Meditrina hospital in Adityapur in adjoining Seraikela-Kharswan on Tuesday.Swami Nanda, who is the head of Ramkrishna Vivekananda Ashram in Purulia in West Bengal , was admitted to the intensive care unit of the hospital on June 23 in poor health condition. He was brought to the hospital in an unconscious state, with a history of suffering from diabetes and low pressure A seven-member team lead by chief interventional cardiologist Partho Pratim Chaudhary , cardiologist Debashish Nandi conducted the more than three hour surgery on the elderly man on Tuesday. "The operation was a successful one for the 98-year-old man," Meditrina hospital director Amitav Chatterjee said.Explaining the case, Chaudhary said, given the age of the patient, doctors took more time to prepare for the surgery when compared to other cases."We put in passive leads and implanted the pacemaker," he said.Chaudhary added that adequate care was taken to ensure the senior citizen did not contract any infection during and after the operation."There was a possibility of the elderly man not being able to withstand the effect of anesthesia," one of the surgeons said.Responding to a query, Chaudhary said, "In rare cases, patients close to 100 years of age decide to opt for pacemakers."Delighted over the success of the operation, Swami Nanda blessed the team who conducted the surgery. "I arrived here in a critical state but am leaving the hospital in a better condition.
