Newborn deaths: ADM visits MGM Hospital to take stock of situation

JAMSHEDPUR: Additional district magistrate (law and order) Subodh Kumar visited the government-run Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital (MGMMCH) on Saturday to take stock of the sitiation at the hospital where several new-born babies died recently.Kumar held detailed discussions with hospital superintendent B Bhushan on all the issues relating to the ongoing projects pertaining to expansion of the healthcare centre. Kumar has been deputed by the Kolhan commissioner Brajmohan Kumar to take stock of the progress of the projects and other matters relating to the hospital.Hospital officials said shortage of water in various blocks of the multistoried building and administrative difficulties concerning shortage and transfer of staff were discussed during the meeting."Due to the ongoing construction work on the campus, the underground pipeline has been damaged and this has resulted stoppage of water supply in many parts of the complex. As of now, only 25% of the total water supply is available to us," said Bhushan.He added that the shortage of manpower was also taken up during the meeting. "I have told the official that with this shortage of human resource, it will be very difficult to part with the existing staff for the departments - medicines, ENT, surgery and pediatrics - which will be shifted to the new building," Bhushan said.In September, the Kolhan commissioner had visited the hospital for an inspection after a spate of infant deaths were reported between July and August. The bureaucrat had then convened a meeting of the district administration and had drawn up a roadmap to improve the hospital's administration. However, despite the efforts 60 infants had died in MGMMCH between September and October.
