Jaisalmer recorded 732 birth registration of girl child at birth against 1,000 boys’ registration in 2016. The state figures, though, claimed Sikar was one of the better performing district with PCTS data for 2016 claiming that the SRB here was 952. While these districts were always infamous for the skewed sex ratios, the state has claimed situation is not as bad now here. In a recent meeting, directives were issued to implement strict measures to prevent sex determination test in the state. As part of the programme, we even conducted two decoy operations in Haryana,” said Dr Samit Sharma, special secretary (health), health department. The Centre’s CRS showed that the situation was horrific in Sikar, which had reported 649 girls per 1,000 boys, worst in the state.

JAIPUR: Rajasthan might be basking in glory and patting its back over improved sex ratio at birth (SRB) but all might not be as rosy. The recently released Central Registration System figures are contradictory to the figures released by the state. While the Centre has claimed that the state recorded an average SRB of 806 in 2016, the state had then claimed 939 girls had been born to 1,000 boys. The state has also released its data for 2018 where it had claimed that the SRB now stands at 948. Authorities here for the past couple of years have been claiming that the sex ratio has improved dramatically in Rajasthan, on January 24, became one of the five states to win an award for its performance under the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (BBBP).However, the recent CRS figures have raised questions. Officials claimed that while the CRS was based on the data on birth registrations, the state’s Pregnancy and Child Tracking System (PCTS) figures were based on live births recorded. However, the discrepancy between the state and Centre’s figures is something they failed to explain.“We acknowledge that skewed sex ratio is a major challenge for us. The state figures, though, claimed Sikar was one of the better performing district with PCTS data for 2016 claiming that the SRB here was 952. As per the state figures for 2018, Sikar had a SRB of 962.Nagaur (664), Bikaner (693) and Jhunjhunu (723), which was from where PM Narendra Modi had launched the BBBP pan-India on March 8, 2018, are among the worst performing district as per the CRS figures. While these districts were always infamous for the skewed sex ratios, the state has claimed situation is not as bad now here. In Churu, 794 girls born against 1,000 boys in 2016, shows CRS data.CRS figures indicated that abysmal sex ratios is associated with districts in Shekhawati region, some districts bordering Haryana and Punjab and districts in western part of the state. Hanumangarh and Sriganganagar too are among the 10 loswest with 748 and 786 respectively.Western districts such as Jodhpur and Jaisalmer are also among the 10 worst districts with lowest SRB. Jaisalmer recorded 732 birth registration of girl child at birth against 1,000 boys’ registration in 2016. In Jodhpur, the SRB remained at 784, slightly better than Jaisalmer.
