1st Centre for infectious diseases in Rajasthan soon

JODHPUR: Over five years after the announcement of setting up state’s first Centre for Infectious Diseases in Jodhpur and remaining in hibernation for five long years, exercise has begun to give it shape and set it up as a Centre of Excellence for research and studies on infectious diseases.Taking a suo motu cognisance on the issue, the division bench of the high court comprising justice Sangeet Lodha and justice Dinesh Mehta has directed to constitute a three-member advisory committee of experts. The report would comprise the suggestions on the basis of discussions and comments of the experts with a view to develop this centre as a Centre of Excellence for infectious diseases,” said the order.The committee comprises former principal of S N Medical College Dr Arvind Mathur, former secretary of the department of health and research (Central Health and Family Welfare ministry) Dr V K Katoch, and an expert of infectious diseases from CMC Hospital, Vellore Dr O C Abraham.This committee has been asked to give suggestions required for setting up the centre as a Centre of Excellence, so that the objectives of this centre could be achieved and it could be developed and equipped adequately to deal with the infectious diseases. The committee has also been tasked to explore the possibilities of association with other institutions, organizations, research centres and laboratories of international standard so that the high standard of research and experiments in the field of infectious diseases could be undertaken in this centre.The court has also directed the principal of S N Medical College to coordinate with this committee in its task and has listed the matter for hearing on April 23.The centre had been proposed during the previous tenure of Ashok Gehlot government but there was no progress in this direction during the last five years of BJP rule.
