The latest incident marks new a low in the long run of prison security lapses in Rajasthan. In July 2014, the state witnessed one of the worst prison gang wars in its history, when an inmate was shot dead while two others were beaten to death inside Bikaner Central Jail. One inmate, Jai Prakash had fired upon gangster Anandpal Singh and his aide Balbir Banuda. While Banuda was shot dead, Jai Prakash and his accomplice were beaten to death by Sing’s faction. The jail department issued several directions, one of which included keeping a strict vigil over hardcore convicts who have a propensity for violence. However, the prisons across the state continue failed to learn their lessons. An example of it came to the fore when in July 2017, then Jodhpur police commissioner Ashok Rathore told the High court that the Jodhpur jail is a breeding ground of criminals, who have been active in criminal activities from jail itself by using internet.
