8 killed in accident on Agra-Lucknow Expressway

KANPUR: Eight persons were killed and three others critically injured when the SUV in which they were travelling rammed into a truck parked on the roadside on Agra-Lucknow Expressway in Kannauj district on Wednesday.The accident took place at around 4 am near Banpura village under the limits of Tirwa police station. A police team from Tirwa police station arrived at the mishap site and joined the rescue operation to take out people stuck inside the badly mangled SUV. Those who died have been identified as Khayali Ram (65), Vidhya Devi (45), Santoshi Devi (40) , Shalu (35), Raju (21) and Rajendra (38). The bodies of eight deceased were shifted to morgue while the injured, including driver Pappu Yadav, were later shifted to Tirwa Medical College from where they were referred to Kanpur. The family members of the deceased were informed by the police.

The victims hailed from Alwar district of Rajasthan and were heading towards Naimisharanya in Sitapur district in a hired SUV, police said.Police said that going by the eyewitnesses account, the SUV carrying the pilgrims was being driven on a high-speed and the driver failed to see the truck parked on the roadside.The local residents alerted the police and also launched a rescue operation. A police team from Tirwa police station arrived at the mishap site and joined the rescue operation to take out people stuck inside the badly mangled SUV. The bodies of eight deceased were shifted to morgue while the injured, including driver Pappu Yadav, were later shifted to Tirwa Medical College from where they were referred to Kanpur. The condition of two among them was stated to be critical.On the basis of the information provided by the driver, so far six bodies were identified while the identity of the remaining two is yet to be ascertained. The family members of the deceased were informed by the police. Those who died have been identified as Khayali Ram (65), Vidhya Devi (45), Santoshi Devi (40) , Shalu (35), Raju (21) and Rajendra (38).
