Heavy rain takes 14 lives in UP, toll climbs up to 106

LUCKNOW: Moderate to heavy rain was reported from most parts of state on Wednesday. At Elgin bridge in Barabanki though it was still flowing 0.3metre above the danger mark it showed a declining trend.Sharda at Palia Kalan in Lakhimpur Kheri was also flowing 0.8 metre above the danger mark and was recorded stable. Although the rainfall activity declined in the later half on Wednesday, widespread rainfall is expected in the state on Thursday. Yamuna which was flowing above the danger mark in Muzaffarnagar on Tuesday though receded it continued to breach the mark in Mathura by flowing at least 0.1 metre above it and still rising. The three rivers which breached the danger mark were Ghaghra in Faizabad and Barabanki, Sharda in Lakhimpur Kheri and Yamuna in Mathura.Ghaghra again crossed the danger mark at Ayodhya in Faizabad flowing at least 0.02 metre above it but showed a stable trend.

Although the rainfall activity declined in the later half on Wednesday, widespread rainfall is expected in the state on Thursday. Rainfall can be heavy at isolated places.As a result of incessant rains over the past one week, the rain deficit of the state has reduced to 4% below normal on August 1 from 39.5% below normal on July 25. In the same period, the West UP improved from 35% below normal to 8% above normal and East UP from 44% below normal to 16% below normal.In 24 hours from Tuesday (8.30am) till Wednesday (8.30am), Nanpara in Bahraich recorded 150 mm rainfall, highest in the state. On Wednesday, from 8.30am till 5.30pm, rainfall as highest in Barielly (33.2 mm). State Met director JP Gupta said that a low pressure area is hovering over east UP. The monsoon trough line is also passing from over the state. Together the two factors have caused ample rains in the state over the past one week.He said that the rainfall activity is expected to continue on Thursday and Friday. The eastern, southern and central parts of the state are expected to receive more rains in comparison to the West and North.Fourteen people were killed and seven others injured in rain-related incidents in different parts of the state in the past 24 hours, raising the death toll to 106 since the last week, official sources said on Thursday.According to reports, two people were killed each in Farukhabad and Bahraich while one each in Kheri, Rae Bareli, Lucknow, Kanpur Dehat, Barabanki, Sitpaur and Sultanpur. Over 100 people were injured, officials said, adding more than 80 heads of cattle died and 600 houses were damaged due to rains since the last week.According to relief commissioner Sanjay Kumar, 148 people were killed in rain-related incidents in the state since July 1. Most of the deaths occurred due to wall and house collapse, uprooting of trees, electrocution and caving in of land, officials said.Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed senior officials of all the districts to alert people and asked them to undertake extensive tours of the affected areas and identify dilapidated buildings and get them vacated, a government spokesperson said here.Out of the 18 rivers in the state which are being monitored for their water level, at least a dozen were on the rise on Wednesday. Ken and Betwa which had ebbed on Tuesday were on the rise again.
