NEW DELHI: Four professors of IIT-Kanpur have been found guilty of harassment of a junior colleague belonging to scheduled caste community in violation of conduct rules under the statute of the institute by an inquiry committee. The inquiry conducted by Justice Saeed-Uz-Zaman Siddiqi (retired) also found the senior faculty members guilty of insubordination and of questioning the recruitment process of which they themselves were part of.The inquiry was instituted by the board of governors (BoG) of IIT and the report was submitted on the third week of August. According to IIT-Kanpur sources, the BoG is likely to meet on September 6 and the matter may come up for discussion.Earlier in February 2018, a three-member fact-finding committee prima-facie found that assistant professor Subrahmanyam Saderla, an alumni of IIT-Kanpur, had been harassed and recommended suitable action keeping under the SC/ ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989.The inquiry was instituted against professor C S Upadhyaya, professor Sanjay Mittal , professor Ishan Sharma and professor Rajiv Shekhar (now director of Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad ) following a complaint by Saderla who joined IIT-Kanpur on January 1, 2018.Twelve days later Saderla sent an email to the director requesting him to take appropriate action so that no new faculty member should ever face a similar embarrassing and humiliating situation as he had in the future.Saderla alleged that in a seminar held in October 2017, Sharma continuously asked questions and joked in such a manner as to make Saderla feel ridiculed.
