KANPUR: A team of doctors from Mumbai, who had arrived on Thursday midnight, has pinned hope as far as IPS Surendra Kumar Das 's recovery is concerned.The IPS officer is under treatment after he consumed poisonous substance on Wednesday morning. As per the police probe, Das had consumed celphos.The hospital sources meanwhile informed that though, there is no sign of recovery, Das's treatment is underway with the helpof ECMO (Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation), an advanced medical setup, which is used for critically-ill patients of poisoning. The setup has been brought to the city from Mumbai."The machine works like a combination of heart and lungs. In such cases, pumping activity of heart is reduced to 30% and most patients die in one to three days due to multiple organs' failure. But as soon as the patient is put on ECMO, blood pressure and circulation can be restored to normal. The machine pumps blood like the heart and the oxygenator gives oxygen to the blood as lungs do," explained Dr Rajesh Agarwal, chief medical superintendent, Regency hospital, where the IPS officer is undergoingtreatment.He added this treatment mode can be used to handle generation of phosphine gas after consumption of celphos (aluminum phosphide ).
