KANPUR: Actor Shabana Azmi on Sunday questioned gender inequality in education, recalling a text she came through in a class III book. She said, "There was a question that where is mother? Mother is in the kitchen. Then there was another question: where is father? Answer was father is in the office. So I said why can't it be "where is mother? Mother is in the office and where is father? Father is in the kitchen.""Why can't it be that mother and father both are in the office or mother and father are both in the kitchen? Why are we making a class III child believe that there should be a clear cut division between how a woman should behave and how a man should behave? What we need in our society is to give equal opportunity and equal access to everyone. With equal opportunity, women will not only proceed shoulder-to-shoulder with men but will also surpass them," she said. She was in Kanpur to take part in a conference on women's health and wellness on Sunday. "No doubt education is necessary for daughters, but what kind of education we are imparting girls is an area that needs to be looked into as usually we don't give enough attention to that," she said.
