Dust is snatching your breath of fresh air daily

LUCKNOW: If you notice any discomfort in breathing these days and think that it’s due to season change, you may be wrong. “Exposure to dust can lead to respiratory issues like asthma , Chronic Obstructive Airways Disease (COAD), allergies and even lung cancer,” said KGMU respiratory intensive care unit in-charge Dr Ved Prakash. The real culprit may be dust, outscoring even vehicular pollution and garbage burning as it is being recorded as the biggest pollutant in particulate matter, constituting 87% share.Officials of Uttar Pradesh Pollution Control Board (UPPCB) shared this disturbing fact about dust pollution at a meeting called recently to formulate a mechanism for pollution control. A study conducted by IIT-Kanpur lists dust as the main reason for poor air quality, so the UPPCB has chalked out a plan to reduce dust emission,” said UPPCB member secretary Ashish Tiwari.UPPCB has requested Lucknow municipal corporation to carry out mechanical sweeping instead of manual one and repair roads soon.A recent study by Lucknow University’s geology department also documented similar results stating that heavy metals present in dust on highways pose serious threat to environment.“Heavy metals like chromium, nickel and lead were found in 20 dust samples collected from Faizabad, Sultanpur and Kanpur highways, making the air quality severe,” said Prof Ajay Kumar Arya of geology department.Dust particles pose severe health hazards, being the main cause of allergies and being carcinogenic. Using an IIT-Kanpur study as the source of their report, UPPCB officials said that dust accounts for major PM10 pollution in Lucknow air, followed by vehicular pollution and garbage burning which form 5.2% and 2.1%, respectively. The pollutants emitted from domestic areas, including coal burning, smoke from kitchen chimneys and others are low on the list, contributing just 1.8% particulate matter in air.UPPCB officials said that the major factors for the increasing dust level in Lucknow air are broken roads and construction sites including those of housing and NRHM sever line work as necessary measures for dust control are not followed.UPPCB has listed 11 roads, six major construction sites and NHRM sewer line construction sites as the main sources of emitting dust.“Dust, a major pollution cause, is mainly emitted from broken roads and uncovered construction sites.
