Leopard attacks villagers in Hamirpur, 8 injured

KANPUR: Eight persons were injured when they were attacked by a leopard in Fattepurwa village in Maudaha town in Hamirpur on Sunday. "The incident took place at around 8 am on Sunday. The villagers informed the police and the forest officials.But by the time they arrived, the animal had escaped into the forest cover. The incident took place on Sunday after a leopard strayed into Fattepurwa village from nearby Khadeh forest cover.It attacked Ram Babu Tiwari, Hari Om, Ram Das, Ram Avtar, Atul, Mohan, Badri Prasad and Sukhdeo, all residents of Fattepurwa village, said forest officials. All injured persons have been admitted to a nearby Community Health Centre from where two among them were later referred to a government hospital in neighbouring Banda district ," said a forest official.Efforts are on to catch the leopard, and a big cage has been placed outside the village to trap it, informed district forest officer (DFO) Sanjeev Kumar.

The big cat had initially attacked a minor boy, who was plucking branches of a neem tree in village, they added.On hearing his shrieks, a group of villagers, armed with lathis, rushed to his help, they, too, were attacked by the leopard.Soon, more villagers arrived at the spot and chased away the big cat, the officials said. The villagers informed the police and the forest officials.But by the time they arrived, the animal had escaped into the forest cover. "The incident took place at around 8 am on Sunday. All injured persons have been admitted to a nearby Community Health Centre from where two among them were later referred to a government hospital in neighbouring Banda district ," said a forest official.Efforts are on to catch the leopard, and a big cage has been placed outside the village to trap it, informed district forest officer (DFO) Sanjeev Kumar.
