LUCKNOW: Despite fall in the air pollution levels the air quality of the city remained ‘very poor’ on Thursday. According to the Central Pollution Control Board, the Air Quality Index (AQI) of the city was 310, 78 units lesser than 388 recorded on Wednesday.Still the concentrations levels of PM2.5 were found to be five times higher than the safe limits of 60 micrograms per cubic metre of air. Lalbagh was the most polluted with the PM2.5 concentration. It was followed by Aliganj with PM2.5 concentration of 301. Third was Talkatora with pollution levels of 297 micrograms.Lucknow University was the least polluted of the five localities with PM2.5 levels of 141 micrograms, still figuring under ‘poor’ category. The air quality of in city fluctuated between ‘poor’ and ‘very poor’.Similar was the case with other UP cities like Ghaziabad and Greater Noida which recorded AQI of 286 and 296, respectively. In cities like Agra, Baghpat, Hapur , Kanpur, Muzaffarnagar and Varanasi, the AQI was above 300.“ The rise or fall in the pollution levels is dependent on the wind velocity and temperatures; when both are high the pollution levels go down and when they are low, the level goes up,” said director, air quality monitoring station cell, LU, Prof Dhruv Sen Singh.
