UP: Denied toilet by in-laws, woman sets herself ablaze in Fatehpur

KANPUR: A 35-year-old woman, on Thursday, allegedly committed suicide by setting herself afire in Fatehpur district after her in-laws did not allow to use their toilet. They assaulted her following which she decided to commit suicide,” said Gudiya’s husband Ram Bahadur. They did not even permit her to construct a separate toilet for herself at home.The incident took place in Datauli village under the Lalauli police station of the district. His wife was insisting on having a separate toilet at home but family was not in favour that too and forced her to visit nearby jungles, he stated further in the complaint. Gudiya Devi , after her in-laws did not allow her to use their toilet, insisted on having a separate toilet constructed in the house as she had to go to nearby jungles to defecate in open.“On Wednesday, she entered into an altercation with her in-laws over the issue.

Ram Bahadur works in a private firm in Surat and had come home for Diwali.Ram further revealed in the complaint that there was a toilet in his house but his mother and other siblings restricted his wife and two minor kids from using it. His wife was insisting on having a separate toilet at home but family was not in favour that too and forced her to visit nearby jungles, he stated further in the complaint. Police reached the house and took body to district hospital for postmortem examination.“As per the neighbours, a quarrel over the issue had ensued between the woman and her in-laws on Wednesday,” said station house officer Rajesh Maurya.The woman’s husband Ram Bahadur had gone to meet village head apprising him about the Wednesday incident, leaving Gudiya alone in the house. “When he returned, his parents and siblings told him that his wife had committed suicide by setting herself ablaze,” police said further and added, “Later, Ram Bahadur alerted the Lalauli police.”“We have received a complaint and are investigating the incident. Those found guilty will be booked over charges abatement of suicide and sent to jail,”said SHO further.
