PWD apathy kills man; body found in ditch dug for repair

KANPUR: A 30-year-old private worker, Akhilesh Kumar, died after falling into a 10-ft-deep water filled ditch dug up allegedly by the Jalkal department at Shivli-Kalyanpur road, on late Thursday night.The ditch, allegedly dug up by PWD department for repairing a leakage in pipeline, was left open. Inspector Kalyanpur Satish Kumar Singh said, "We came to know about the incident early on Friday morning. The police have not received any complaint in this regard by the family members yet, he added. The police rushed to the spot and shifted the body to mortuary." Akhilesh, while riding back home on a motorcycle, failed to notice it and fell down.Passers-by spotted his body and a motorcycle in the ditch early on Friday morning and alerted the local police.Residents of the locality complained that there were no barricades or signboards to warn the passers-by about the repairing being done there for past few days.Blaming the authorities for their carelessness, the residents said only a few bamboo sticks were erected on the sides of the ditch as a warning.
