Two boys crushed to death by UPSRTC bus

Kanpur: Two boys were crushed by a speeding UPSRTC bus in Jarib Chowki area of the city on Thursday afternoon.The victims were identified as Sundram (17), son of Uma Shankar and Shariq (14), son of Mobeen. Till late evening, the bus driver could not be arrested. They died on the spot,” said police.Later, their family members and locals assembled at the spot and held a protest demanding arrest of the bus driver. Witnesses said the driver drove the bus a few metres ahead and then fled abandoning the vehicle. Irate protestors also pelted bricks and stones on the vehicles involved in the mishap.

The bus belonged to Vikas Nagar depot.Sundram, a second-year student of ITI in Kakadeo, and a resident of Sikera Estate in Raipurwa, along with his neighbourhood friend Mobeen had gone to a bank in Ashok Nagar to get his passbook updated.“When they reached Zarib Chowki area a speeding tempo hit them following which they fell on the road and came under the wheels of a bus. They died on the spot,” said police.Later, their family members and locals assembled at the spot and held a protest demanding arrest of the bus driver. Irate protestors also pelted bricks and stones on the vehicles involved in the mishap. Police and administrative officials rushed to the spot to pacify the protesters and after assurance of recommendation of release of ex-gratia by authorities, the dharna was lifted.Police said a case of death due to rash and negligent driving has been registered at the local police station. Witnesses said the driver drove the bus a few metres ahead and then fled abandoning the vehicle. Till late evening, the bus driver could not be arrested.
