‘Shraddha kalash’ at ghats to keep Ganga clean in city

Kanpur: In a bid to keep Ganga free from religious material, the district administration has decided to place 'shraddha kalash' (urns ) at all major ghats in Kanpur and Bithoor in which the devotees will be asked to drop the prayer material, flowers etc, and then immerse them in the river.Executive engineer (environment) RK Pal said that at a meeting held in Lucknow, a private company had been given the contract of keeping all major ghats of Ganga in Kanpur and Bithoor clean.The company would depute ten sanitary workers at each ghat who besides cleaning them daily would request the devotees to drop their old deities and prayer material in the 'shraddha kalash'.The government has given the contract to the company for a period of three years and would pay Rs 3.40 crore to it, Pal said.
