Kanpur: It was a conversation on mobile phone that led the police arrest Bablu Pandey, alias Vinay Pandey, native of Basti for robbing UP cabinet minister Satish Mahana’s sister-in-law of her gold chain.Bablu has several cases of heinous crimes including, loot and attempt to murder lodged against him. Neetu was robbed of her gold chain when she was returning from a wedding in Cantt area on night of January 19.Police have recovered a gold chain of about 75 gm and a motorbike from Bablu’s possession. Bablu was also involved in a recent case of chain snatching.“We registered an FIR. With the help of CCTV footage it was found that Bablu had committed the crime”, said a senior police official.After committing the crime, Bablu had escaped to his native place in Basti district. Later, following specific inputs, the police had put his mobile phone on surveillance. “The sleuths came across a communication between him and his alleged girl friend, from Bhadohi area”, the police said. Bablu had shared the loot incident with his girl friend in the conversation, the police added.The police raided Tadijot village in Basti and nabbed Bablu, said SP (East) Raj Kumar Agarwal. The accused, carrying a reward of Rs 25,000 on his head, was released from jail recently, he said.Agarwal told TOI that Bablu had looted 50 gm of gold and 5 kg of silver from a jeweller in Aseewan area of Unnao in 2105. In 2008, the Rail Bazar police had invoked Goonda Act against him.“We are now trying to arrest his aide, identified as Yusuf, ”, said the SP.
