UP: Centre waves green flag for Kanpur, Agra Metro

LUCKNOW: The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved the Metro projects for Kanpur and Agra, paving way for the construction of mass public transport systems in the two cities.Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC), jointly owned by Union and UP governments, has been reconstituted as Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) for implementation of other Metro projects in the state. The project with an estimated cost of Rs 11,076.48 crore will be completed in five years.Agra Metro Rail Project also has two corridors. The 14 km Sikandra to Taj East Gate corridor, is partly elevated and partly underground and has six elevated and seven underground stations while the 15.40 km Agra Cantt to Kalindi Vihar corridor having 14 stations is totally elevated. Kanpur Metro Rail Project includes two corridors, the 23.785 km ITT to Naubasta corridor, which is partly elevated and partly underground and comprises of 22 stations (14 elevated and 8 underground) and the 8.6 km Agriculture University to Barra corridor with four elevated and four underground stations. The Centre’s approval will clear the route for more funds for the projects.

Central and state governments will jointly finance the projects on equal equity basis while loans will also be taken from international funding agencies for the two facilities.Congratulating the residents of Kanpur and Agra, CM Yogi Adityanath hailed the Cabinet decision saying that the projects will boost development in the two cities and state.The government has already sanctioned Rs 175 crore each for Metro projects of the two cities. The Centre’s approval will clear the route for more funds for the projects. Kanpur Metro Rail Project includes two corridors, the 23.785 km ITT to Naubasta corridor, which is partly elevated and partly underground and comprises of 22 stations (14 elevated and 8 underground) and the 8.6 km Agriculture University to Barra corridor with four elevated and four underground stations. The Rs 8,379.62 crore project will be completed in five years.“The process to finalise contractors for construction of Kanpur Metro has already started while tenders for Agra will be floated soon,” said LMRC managing director Kumar Keshav, who is chief advisor for UPMRC.UP government has also cleared Metro projects in Varanasi and Gorakhpur and allocated Rs 150 crore each for them.
