At the same time, SpiceJet has announced to start direct flights to Kolkata after Delhi and Mumbai. The first flight to Kolkata will take off on 24 July.

The airline will start only after the permission of the airport authority and the flight schedule will be decided. IndiGo had made an oral proposal to start flights to four cities six months ago, on which the airport authorities had demanded a written proposal. The airport director said that if IndiGo`s airline has also started, it will be the first time that seven aircraft of two companies will fly simultaneously from Chakeri airport. He told that maybe by then SpiceJet will also start air service to Bangalore.

At present travellers from cities like Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Surat etc. first come to Lucknow, then they travel to Kanpur by road. However, traffic remains a big issue between the two big cities of Uttar Pradesh. To solve this problem, the work of expansion of Chakeri airport is going on.
