Rare documents, books to be on show at Sasthrayan

Organisers of the event said that the old documents that would go on display include chemistry journals as well as office documents. A collection of rare documents and books, including a Latin copy of the legendary Hortus Malabaricus, will be on display at the Maharaja’s College on Thursday and Friday as the College organises the ‘Sasthrayan’ programme aimed at sharing its past and future programmes with the public. Prasad, former Pro Vice Chancellor of Calicut University and former Maharaja’s College Principal, will inaugurate the ‘Sasthrayan’ programme at 10 a.m. at the seminar hall of the college. There will be quiz competitions on Indian polity for higher secondary students on February 22 and on history of science for college students on February 23. A hundred research papers that came out of the Maharaja’s College are expected to receive special attention.

The Zoology museum, opened in 1874 and with over 1,500 species, will be open to the public as part of the event. Old magazines, scientific instruments and electronic microscope will be part of the exhibition. A hundred research papers that came out of the Maharaja’s College are expected to receive special attention. A food festival and various competitions are part of the event. Arabic calligraphy, magazines from Arab countries and stamps will also be displayed. Experiments in microbiology, specimen museum, tissue culture laboratory, DNA lab, medicinal plants and modern scientific equipment would be put on show by the Botany Department, said a statement issued by the organisers. M.K. Prasad, former Pro Vice Chancellor of Calicut University and former Maharaja’s College Principal, will inaugurate the ‘Sasthrayan’ programme at 10 a.m. at the seminar hall of the college. Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute Director A. Gopalakrishnan will release a stamp on the occasion. The programme is open between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. There would also be facility for sky watching between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. on these days, the organisers added.
