The six-member technical expert committee constituted by District Collector K. Mohammed Y. Safirulla on Friday had recommended urgent measures for the restoration of the road and nearby structures that were damaged in the impact of the collapse. Accordingly, laying of coconut piles along the border of the damaged road started in the morning. “The foundation of the road was found to have slipped under the impact of the collapse. Coconut piling is aimed at preventing further damage to the foundation and to keep it intact,” said M.T. Shabu, executive engineer, PWD (Roads). The committee had recommended strengthening of the sunken portion of the road by providing coconut piles in both ways for a length of six metres. Shoring piles erected as part of the two-storey deep basement parking for the upcoming 12-storey textile showroom had crumbled on Thursday night, threatening the structural stability of the road winding next to it and adjacent buildings. The restoration work is being undertaken by the garment company under the guidance of the PWD, but at its own expense, Mr. Shabu said. Once coconut piles are laid, the sunken portion of the road will be filled with red earth in layers and in proper compaction up to the original level. Meanwhile, the road between Judges Avenue and Kaloor junction remained out of bounds for traffic for the second consecutive day. Mr. Shabu was hopeful of restoring traffic on the road by Monday. Water supply through 300 mm and 700 mm pipelines on either side of the old road, which was hit following the incident, was not restored in several areas in the city on Saturday. “Pumping through the 300-mm pipeline was completely suspended after the pipes were washed off and disjointed, while low-pressure pumping was maintained through the 700-mm pipeline owing to its thin soil cover in the wake of the incident,” said Jessy Jose, executive engineer, Kerala Water Authority (KWA). In fact, KWA officials assembled men and materials for undertaking pipeline restoration work as soon as the road enhancement work reached the level of laying pipelines. Originally, the affected pipelines were laid at a depth of two metres beneath the washed away road. The 66 kV underground cable of the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) near the site also remained switched off, with the authorities making alternative arrangements to balance the supply side. The cable could not be recharged on Saturday, KSEB sources said.
