A few cases of violent break-ins at houses and thefts at commercial establishments and temples in various parts of the district have led residents to take a keen interest in safety measures rather than leaving everything to the police. Sub Inspector K.K. Shebab told The Hindu that the members of the women’s cell in Thripunithura were trained in self-defence techniques, and a few classes would soon be arranged for women. General classes on safety issues and talks on self-defence had been organised during special meetings of residents’ associations. Being part of special squads that will help the police ensure better patrolling is a voluntary exercise. Tips on how to ensure safety at home by checking the latches of windows and doors, to alert neighbours or police in case of untoward intrusions, to keep phone numbers of neighbours and police handy, and to ensure that security cameras face roads leading to houses were part of the talks held during the awareness classes.
