  • | Monday | 18th June, 2018

The promoters of the project envisage that 85% of the total revenue can be generated from electricity produced at the plant. Construction of the project can be started once the state environmental impact assessment authority(SEIAA) clears the project. "It is up to the GJ Eco Care Private Ltd to take care of the construction work. Once SEIAA gives its approval, we would be able to start the construction of the plant," an official associated with the project said. The plan is to complete the Rs 295 crore waste-to-energy plant in two phases. A plant to process the garbage and produce refuse-derived fuel (RDF)in the form of bricks would be set up in the first phase.

KOCHI: Ending a delay of over two years, Kerala State Electricity Regulatory Commission (KSERC) has fixed Rs 6.17 as the tariff per unit for KSEB to purchase electricity from the proposed waste-to-energy plant at Brahmapuram.Earlier, KSERC had rejected the proposal of GJ Eco Care, the private partner of Kochi corporation, which is to construct the plant on public-private partnerships (PPP) model, citing the cost of constructing the plant and generation of electricity is exorbitant. The corporation has invited tenders for cutting 500-odd trees in the land earmarked for the project. Construction of the project can be started once the state environmental impact assessment authority(SEIAA) clears the project. "It is up to the GJ Eco Care Private Ltd to take care of the construction work. The state government has asked us to facilitate the construction works. So, we have invited tenders for cutting down trees," said V K Minimol, chairperson for health standing committee, Kochi corporation.Corporation has already handed over 20 acres at Brahmapuram to the firm. "We have submitted the application for environmental clearance to SEIAA. As per the schedule, the construction of the first phase of the project, which is to treat garbage will be completed by January 2019.In the second phase, the gasification plant to generate energy from the RDF will be constructed. Though major portion of 20 acres earmarked for the project was wetland where construction is not allowed, the government gave exemption. The construction of the project, designed in 2015, was mired in controversies and lacked clearance. The promoters of the project envisage that 85% of the total revenue can be generated from electricity produced at the plant.
