One more body recovered, landslide toll touches 13

KOZHIKODE/PALAKKAD: With the recovery of the body of Aasya (54), wife of Hassan of Karinchola, the death toll in Thursday’s landslide touched 13. A special team also reached the landslide-hit area to head the operations.The search for Nafeesa, wife of Karinchola Abdu Rahiman will continue on Monday. Search operation was carried out on Sunday with the support of land scanner brought from Delhi. The loss is estimated to be Rs 36,70,000.Also, two boys Nibin (5) and Assan (6) at Karunagappally in Kollam on Sunday drowned in a waterlogged paddy field near their home.

The search team recovered her body on Sunday, four days after the tragedy. Eight members of Hassan’s family were buried under the debris at Karinchola following a major landslide.Karinchola Hassan, wife Aasya, daughters Nusrath and Hannath, daughter-inlaw Shamna and grandchildren Niya Fathima, Rinsha Mehrin and Rifa Fathima Mariyam were killed in the landslide. Search operation was carried out on Sunday with the support of land scanner brought from Delhi. A special team also reached the landslide-hit area to head the operations.The search for Nafeesa, wife of Karinchola Abdu Rahiman will continue on Monday. Rahiman, son Jafar and grandson Jasim were killed in the landslide while Jafar’s wife and daughter had a miraculous escape.Meanwhile, revenue minister E Chandrashekharan assured that the state cabinet would hold a discussion on the compensation package for the victims of Kattippara landslide. After visiting the landslide-hit area and victims on Sunday, the minister said that the compensation package would be announced only after getting a comprehensive report on the loss.Meanwhile, the rain havoc in Palakkad has resulted in a loss of Rs 4.06 crore. District collector D Balamurali said that between May 30 and June 15, seven houses were destroyed and 97 partially damaged in the landslips at Alathur, Mannarkkad and Ottappalam.
