Sex abuse: Probe team to visit two other convents

KOTTAYAM: The police team probing the alleged sexual abuse of a nun by Jalandhar bishop, Franco Mulakkal, would be visiting two other convents associated with the Jalandhar diocese . On Tuesday, the nun repeated the details about the abuse to the probe team also.Police are also trying to trace the mobile phone used by the nun. The nun, in the statement recorded before a magistrate, had revealed more about the sexual abuse by the bishop.

KOTTAYAM: The police team probing the alleged sexual abuse of a nun by Jalandhar bishop, Franco Mulakkal, would be visiting two other convents associated with the Jalandhar diocese . The probe team will be visiting the two convents in Kannur within two days, informed a source.Police will check whether the bishop had visited any of these convents and if so will record the statements of the residents there. However, as per the information available with the probe team, the bishop used to visit the convent at Kuravilangad in Kottayam district whenever he visited Kerala . “If the bishop has not visited the convents in Kannur, we will try to find out why he visited only the convent at Kuravilangad,” said a member of the probe team.Meanwhile, the investigation team recorded the statement of the complainant nun for the second time on Tuesday. The nun, in the statement recorded before a magistrate, had revealed more about the sexual abuse by the bishop. On Tuesday, the nun repeated the details about the abuse to the probe team also.Police are also trying to trace the mobile phone used by the nun. The nun is learnt to have lost the ordinary mobile phone she used to use in Jalandhar, more than two years ago. Investigating officers said the recovery of the phone would be helpful for the prosecution.The investigation team, meanwhile, has been directed by Kottayam SP Hari Sankar to gather maximum evidence against the bishop before proceeding to interrogate him, it is learnt. Since the investigation involves two states, the probe team do not want to leave any loop holes. The head of the investigation team, Vaikom DSP K Subhash, is in constant touch with the district police chief apprising him of the progress in the probe.The Catholic Church had fallen into deep crisis following the allegations of sexual abuse made by the nun against the bishop. The crisis further deepened for the Church as the nun claimed that her complaint to several authorities regarding the abuse was left unaddressed which forced her to approach the police.
